Andretti Formula E Looks to Extend Strong Form in Shanghai

7.1.26

As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday over Fourth of July weekend, Andretti Formula E heads to Shanghai for Rounds 12 and 13 of the Season 12 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as the Asian leg of the season continues at the iconic Shanghai International Circuit. Across previous visits, the team has scored three points finishes, led 11 laps and remains the only outfit to claim two Fastest Laps at the venue, underlining its strong historical pace. The 3.05km West Long layout combines long straights, sweeping curves and heavy braking zones, creating multiple overtaking opportunities and demanding precise energy management, with PIT BOOST adding further strategic variation. Jake Dennis arrives off the back of a victory in Sanya while teammate Felipe Drugovich continues his run of consistent top-10 finishes. With the team on the verge of a front-row start all-time series record, Shanghai presents a key opportunity for the American team to build Championship momentum as the season draws to a close.

Andretti Formula E

  • Andretti Formula E has claimed three points finishes across the previous two seasons in Shanghai while being the only team to have claimed two Fastest Lap accolades there.
  • Andretti drivers have led 11 laps across the previous four E-Prix’s in Shanghai, with an Andretti car qualifying seventh in three of the four races held at the circuit.
  • Should an Andretti driver claim a front-row start at Round 12 or 13, the US team will take the record for the most front-row starts in the most cities. The record is currently tied between Andretti, Nissan and Techeetah.
  • Last time out in Sanya, Andretti Formula E achieved several milestones, surpassing 1,500 Championship points and 500 laps led, securing its first-ever front-row lockout, while recording the team’s 75th top-five finish, 15th pole position, 13th victory and 42nd podium.

Jake Dennis

  • Jake Dennis has scored 11 points across his previous races in Shanghai and claimed the Fastest Lap in the city’s first Formula E race during Season 10
  • Last time out at the Shanghai International Circuit, the Brit reached the Duel stages of qualifying and put his Andretti Porsche 99X Electric seventh for the race start.
  • Last time out in Sanya, Dennis secured his eighth Formula E victory and eighth pole position, while also recording his 25th podium, 40th top-five finish, 18th front-row start and 18th race led.
  • Dennis’ victory moved him level with Nissan’s Oliver Rowland on eight Formula E wins and clear of former teammate Maximilian Güenther on the all-time winners’ list.
  • By topping qualifying in Sanya, Dennis set a new Formula E record for the highest Duels win percentage (61.76%) and extended his record for the most Final Duel appearances by any driver (15).

Felipe Drugovich

  • Heading into Rounds 12 and 13, Felipe Drugovich has become the fifth driver to have claimed four consecutive top-10 finishes for Andretti (Robin Frijns, António Félix da Costa, Alexander Sims, Dennis and Drugovich).
  • The Brazilian is the only driver on the grid to have finished in the top 10 in the last four races.
  • While the No. 28 driver has not driven at the Shanghai International Circuit, he has visited the track during his role as Aston Martin Formula One Team reserve driver.
  • Last time out in Sanya, Drugovich equalled his best-ever qualifying result, matching Miami, with his second front-row start and second Final Duel appearance for Andretti Formula E.
  • He also secured his third top-five finish in just his 11th race with Andretti, alongside a fifth career top-10 finish.
  • The Brazilian’s performance also lifted his Duels win percentage to 44.44%, moving him ahead of Season 7 World Champion Nyck de Vries and Season 3 World Champion Lucas di Grassi.

Jake Dennis

No. 27 Andretti Porsche 99X Electric

“We can obviously take some confidence heading into Shanghai, given the way we dominated the whole weekend in Sanya. The team is working tirelessly to try and continue our strong performance, and hopefully, we can arrive at a similar level. The conditions in Shanghai will be somewhat similar to those we experienced in Sanya, with high temperatures and humidity, although the characteristics of the track are significantly different, so it’s going to be a very different event. We’ve generally been able to qualify quite well in Shanghai, but have not been able to convert that during the race. I’m hopeful that with our improvements compared to last year, we should be in a better position to try and fight for points from the front end of the race.”

Felipe Drugovich

No. 28 Andretti Porsche 99X Electric

“It’s been very encouraging to see the consistency we’ve been able to build over the last few race weekends. After the first handful of races, there was a little bit of a question, not from the team but from myself, regarding how I can keep improving and get something to click to fight up at the front. I think it’s starting to come together now, and I feel like I’m on the right path. It’s still a path full of learning as we get through each race, but it feels like I’m doing that pretty well, and hopefully, we can keep going in this direction.

Shanghai seems as if it’s going to be a race that has a lot of importance on trying to distinguish what kind of race it is quite early on in terms of energy management and PIT BOOST strategy, but I’m quite confident that Shanghai can be a good track for me. It’s a type of circuit that I like, and I would say it’s similar in style to Miami, so that’s good. I’m looking forward to getting out there, as it seems like it will be quite enjoyable to drive the Formula E car there. In terms of defining success at the doubleheader event, to score decent points in both races is going to be the aim and to maintain that consistency. I’m obviously always going to be striving for a podium finish, and hopefully, if God allows me to, to finish on the top spot of the podium would be truly amazing.”

Roger Griffiths

Team Principal

“We really hit the ground running in Sanya and delivered an exceptional performance. While we typically show strong competitiveness in hotter conditions, to achieve the historic one-two in qualifying and take the victory was a testimony to the work everyone on the team put in both before and during the event. While we have never lacked motivation within the team, off the back of the Sanya result, I’m certain everyone will be eager for more as we head to Shanghai.

Shanghai has typically seen mixed fortunes for the team, but we believe the hotter conditions we anticipate encountering could well play into our hands and the Porsche package. While Felipe has not driven in Shanghai with Formula E, it’s a track he has some familiarity with and so any disadvantage should be minimal. He quickly demonstrated in Sanya his outright pace and we’re aiming for him to pick up where he left off last time out. With our recent form and string of results, we head into the closing stages of the season aiming to finish strongly. Our goal has always been to be the best of the non-manufacturer teams and if we can out-perform any of the manufacturers, then even better! It may be too early to be thinking about a run at the Drivers’ Championship with Jake, but if we can keep this momentum going, then you never know what might come our way. Stranger things have happened in Formula E!”
