Andretti Formula E Kicks Off Second Half of Season in Shanghai

5.27.25

After a mixed weekend at the Tokyo E-Prix, the Andretti Formula E team heads to Shanghai for Rounds 10 and 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as the team prepares for the midpoint of the Series’ Asia stretch. The 2025 Shanghai E-Prix marks the second time Formula E races at the iconic Shanghai International Circuit, where the West Long layout, adapted from the traditional Formula 1 track, promises a fast and tactical challenge for teams and drivers. With its sweeping curves, long straights and heavy braking zones, the 3.05 km configuration demands precision and timing, especially with the return of PIT BOOST adding extra complexity to race strategy. As Rounds 10 and 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship get underway, Andretti Formula E will be looking to keep momentum rolling and convert recent form into podium success on Chinese soil.

Shanghai E-Prix

  • Shanghai became part of the Formula E calendar in Season 10 and is the fourth Chinese city to host a Formula E-Prix – previously racing in Beijing, Hong Kong and Sanya – marking the Championship’s first visit to China since 2019.
  • Following suit from last year, the 2025 Shanghai E-Prix will run on the West Long Circuit layout of the Shanghai International Circuit, a 3.05km variant of the Formula 1 configuration in which Norman Nato set the race lap record while driving for Andretti Formula E in Season 10 (1:15.358).
  • The 2025 Shanghai E-Prix will be the first time in Formula E history that a doubleheader event sees each race take place in a different calendar month, with Race 1 scheduled for May 31 and Race 2 following on June 1.
  • Known for its wide corners, high-speed straights and heavy braking zones, the West Long Circuit layout provides ample overtaking opportunities and will showcase the GEN3 Evo’s enhanced capabilities.
  • Last season’s Shanghai doubleheader event witnessed a staggering combined 410 overtakes, with 264 coming from Round 11 and 146 from Round 12.
  • Located in Jiading District, the circuit is part of China’s largest motorsport hub and a symbol of the country’s growing investment in electric mobility and racing innovation.
  • Shanghai, the most populous city in China with approximately 25 million residents, is a global center of commerce, finance and technology, making it a key market for Formula E’s electric future.
  • The return of PIT BOOST in Shanghai adds another layer of strategy, challenging teams to optimize energy usage, timing and track position with the mandatory mid-race fast charge.
  • China hosted the very first Formula E race back in September 2014, where the Andretti Formula E team claimed its first podium with a second-place finish.

Andretti Formula E

  • Andretti Formula E has eight points-scoring finishes at previous E-Prixs held in China, including three podiums, a second-place finish at the Season 1 opener in Beijing, António Félix da Costa’s third-place podium at the 2019 Sanya E-Prix and more recently, Norman Nato’s third-place finish at the Season 10 Shanghai E-Prix II.
  • At last season’s doubleheader Shanghai race, Andretti Formula E drivers claimed Fastest Laps in both E-Prixs, making the team the only outfit to have claimed extra championship points in the city.
  • Andretti Formula E drivers have claimed a podium in every city in China that Formula E has visited (Beijing, Hong Kong, Sanya and Shanghai).
  • Heading into the Shanghai doubleheader event, Andretti Formula E currently sits in sixth place in the Team’s Championship standings with 80 points, while in the Driver Standings, Jake Dennis sits in fifth with 56 points and teammate Nico Mueller in 17th with 24 points.

Jake Dennis

  • In Shanghai last season, Dennis secured his 10th Fastest Lap in Formula E, becoming one of only four drivers in series history to reach double digits.
  • The second race in Shanghai last year was the only time the British driver has finished a Formula E race in 11th place.
  • Should Dennis score 26 points at the Shanghai doubleheader weekend, he would reach 650 Formula E career points – a feat only seven other drivers have achieved.

Nico Mueller

  • Nico Mueller was the only driver to finish both races of last season’s Shanghai doubleheader in the same position, with the opening race also being one of four times in Season 10 where he started and finished in the same position.
  • The Swiss driver out-qualified his teammate, 2017 Formula E World Champion Lucas di Grassi, at both races during last year’s Shanghai E-Prix doubleheader.

“Finishing on a high in your last race always gives you confidence going to the next race. We had a really good race car, so if we can try and build on this and take that into Shanghai, where the team had a podium last year, I think we can qualify well and have a good result. I had a mixed weekend in Shanghai last year, but we did come away with a top five and fastest lap, which gives you that extra confidence that we can try and score two podiums and continue to move further up in the team and driver standings. Even though I’m aware we’re not fighting for the lead in the Driver’s Championship, it’s not something I focus too much on. I’m just trying to do each race to the best of my ability and score as many points as possible. Right now, I just want to try and bring this team back to winning ways and do the best job I possibly can.”

“I’m quite excited heading into Shanghai. I’m a fan of the track, even though it’s not really the classic Formula E track. The circuit has some great characteristics, and we’re expecting a very strategic race, so I’m looking forward to it. We’ll be aiming to make a step to put our qualifying performance back to where it belongs, as that’s what really hurt us in Tokyo as a team overall. It hasn’t been my strength over the course of the season. I think we’ve shown some strong racing, so if we can qualify well in Shanghai, I’m confident we’ll be in a good position!”

Roger Griffiths

Team Principal

“It’s always good to finish a doubleheader weekend with a positive result in the final race, but we also need to reflect on the missed opportunities from Tokyo. Certainly, Saturday taught the team a lot concerning planning ahead with the weather and possible cancelled sessions, along with the unpredictability of the PIT BOOST races. We hope to bring these experiences to bear in Shanghai. Last year in China saw both Andretti Formula E drivers achieve good results from two very different races, including fastest laps in both E-Prixs, so we know we have the pace to be competitive. China is not only a critical part of the Formula E calendar, but also the Championship’s history. China has been a leader in the electric vehicle market, as well as pioneering the development of battery technology, so to be racing in Shanghai, it is very fitting for Formula E to be returning there once again.”
