RACE REPORT: 2025 Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix

6.21.25

  • After a one-year hiatus, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returned to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta for Round 12 of Season 11. Track action began yesterday afternoon with Free Practice 1 in hot conditions that saw Nico Mueller lead the Andretti Formula E team in the final classification in fifth, with teammate Jake Dennis 13th.
  • Overnight rain produced wet conditions for this morning’s Free Practice 2 session as drivers tackled challenging conditions around the Jakarta International E-Prix Circuit. As the checkered fell in this weekend’s final practice session, Dennis finished 10th with teammate Mueller in 16th.
  • The Andretti Formula E team showed early promise in Qualifying, with both drivers running one-two in Group A in the first half of the session before changing track conditions reshuffled the order. Dennis advanced through the Duels and secured pole position, his seventh in Formula E and the team’s 14th overall, while a mistake from Mueller placed him seventh.
  • The race began positively for both drivers, with Dennis leading confidently and Mueller climbing into the top 10.
  • Strategic driving and strong racecraft saw Mueller rise through the field and ultimately secure his first podium finish with the team, while a late-race issue unfortunately ended Dennis’ hopes of victory after leading for 21 laps.
  • Mueller’s third-place result marked the Andretti Formula E team’s 39th podium in the Series, while Dennis’ on-track performance added to the team’s cumulative 446 laps led.
  • After the 2025 Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix, the Andretti Formula E team heads into the final stretch of Season 11 one position higher in the Teams’ Championship Standings in sixth with 106 points.

Qualifying

  • Dennis started strong in Group B, running second at the halfway mark of the session.
  • As times began to improve, the No. 27’s final push lap put him second overall, advancing to the Duels for his 28th career appearance and the sixth time this season.
  • By reaching the Duels, Dennis continues his four-time streak of progressing from the group stages in all of his previous appearances in Jakarta.
  • The British driver was able to dispatch of Mahindra Racing’s Edoardo Mortara in the Quarter-Final and Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy, progressing into his second Final Duel this season.
  • Dennis was able to demonstrate his strong pace around the 2.37km, 18-Turn circuit, beating NEOM McLaren Formula E team’s Taylor Barnard in the Final Duel and posting the fastest lap time of any driver in qualifying (1:06.713) on his way to pole position.
  • The Brit’s pole position at the 2025 Jakarta E-Prix marks his seventh top-spot qualifying result in Formula E and his first since the 2024 Berlin E-Prix II.

Race

  • Dennis took the start strongly and defended the lead into the first corner of the E-Prix, subsequently controlling the pace of the race until Attack Modes began to be taken around the halfway mark.
  • On Lap 19, the Brit took two minutes of Attack Mode and dropped to second; however, he was able to regain the lead on Lap 21, overtaking Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries.
  • One lap later, Mahindra’s de Vries attempted to overtake the No. 27 into Turn 1 but moved across the track too early, taking off Dennis’ front wing. Fortunately, the Brit was able to continue running in second.
  • Dennis was able to retake the lead on Lap 29 after de Vries took his second Attack Mode. One lap later, the No. 27 took his second Attack Mode for six minutes and dropped to fourth; however, all the cars in front were in an Attack Mode deficit compared to Dennis.
  • After a late Full Course Yellow, the British driver unfortunately suffered an issue with releasing the speed limiter on the restart and subsequently dropped to 18th. At the checkered, Dennis finished 17th.
  • The Season 9 World Champion led for 21 laps, taking his career total of laps led to 253 and races led to 16.

“The Jakarta weekend is done and dusted and we have lots of positives to take from it. I achieved my first pole position of the year and started on the front row for the second time this season which was nice. We were having a really good race and I felt very connected in the car. However, ultimately the race just started to slip away from us on our second Attack Mode. It was looking fairly promising to take the win when we were leading towards the end, but we suffered a small issue under the late Full Course Yellow, and we’re still investigating what caused the issue. Feeling happy to move on to Berlin in a few weeks’ time where hopefully we can score some points. It felt great to be fast again this weekend which is our biggest takeaway – both Nico and I were performing at a high level and it gives us good confidence heading into the German doubleheader.”

Nico Mueller

No. 51 Andretti Porsche 99X Electric

Qualifying

  • Leading the session at the halfway mark, Mueller carried yesterday’s strong pace shown in Free Practice 1 into Group A of Qualifying.
  • The Swiss driver was improving once again on his final push lap; however, he ran wide into Turn 11 and onto the dusty low-grip section. Losing time offline, Mueller finished seventh overall.

Race

  • Mueller made ground at the start of the E-Prix, making up one position on the opening lap. The Swiss driver’s fast pace continued during the opening stages of the race, and by Lap 5, Mueller had made his way up into ninth, setting the fastest lap at the time in the process.
  • Taking early Attack Modes on Lap 16 and Lap 28, the No. 51 made its way through the field after electing to save its extra 50 kWh of power for later on during the race. In doing so, Mueller moved himself up into the top five before benefitting from a late Full Course Yellow, with cars behind in Attack Mode during the forced slow conditions. When the race restarted, Mueller was able to successfully retain fourth place, moving up onto the podium after Envision Racing’s Sebastian Buemi was given a five-second time penalty for an earlier incident.
  • Mueller’s podium at the 2025 Sarinah Jakarta E-Prix marks his first with the Andretti Formula E team and second career podium in Formula E.

“Obviously I’m very pleased for the whole team and all the crew. After all the hard work everyone has put in, scoring a podium here feels very good. We had a strong race and demonstrated good pace combined with our well thought out strategy, and it paid off with a podium. Moreover, what makes me very eager to go into the last four races of the season is that I felt much more comfortable in the car, particularly in Qualifying. I wasn’t quite able to put it together in the tricky conditions and I paid the price when I dipped a wheel off the racing line. Otherwise, I think we were clearly in the Duels today. If we can make that happen in the last four races, I think we can end this season very strongly and that’s the biggest positive takeaway.”

Roger Griffiths

Team Principal

“This is one of those occasions when I’ve been disappointed to finish third but all credit to Nico after he drove a super race. I think he was bitterly disappointed that he didn’t progress into the Duels during Qualifying after a minor mistake, but he drove a smart race, used his Attack Modes wisely and picked off cars when he needed to with some solid overtakes. We’re really pleased for him and he was too; you could see it in his face at the end of the race with the emotions of being up there on the podium. His result also helps us in the Teams’ Standings too, so full credit to him.

On the other side of the garage, this was a victory that truly got away from us. Our first pole position since Berlin last year with a strong qualifying for Jake going up against some tough guys. Come the race, he was controlling it from the front and driving a great race. Obviously, there was the coming together with de Vries that the stewards found in Jake’s favor, and rightly so.
Though the issue with coming out of the Full Course Yellow at the end of the race made Jake a sitting duck for the entire field to come straight past him. We need to dig through the data and try and understand what the fault was.

Overall though, it was great to be back on the podium and on pole. We’ll take the 18 points and turn the focus to gaining another spot or two in the Team’s Championship Standings.”
