RACE REPORT: 2025 Miami E-Prix

4.12.25

  • After an eight-week hiatus, Andretti Formula E was back in action for the team’s home race at Homestead-Miami Speedway yesterday with Free Practice 1 after the earlier planned Shakedown session was cancelled due to torrential rain. Jake Dennis finished 18th, with teammate Nico Mueller in 21st.
  • On-track action resumed this morning with Free Practice 2, where, unfortunately, the No. 51 brought out the red flag after making contact with the barrier at the Turn 10 and 11 chicane, ending the Swiss driver’s session. Taking the checkered, Dennis finished fifth with Mueller in 22nd.
  • Round 5’s Qualifying session saw both Andretti Formula E drivers in Group A, with Dennis advancing to the Duels having finished third, as Mueller placed ninth.
  • Dennis reached the Final Duel, his 10th time doing so, but lost out on pole position by a tenth to Nissan Formula E team’s Norman Nato
  • At the start of the E-Prix, both Andretti Formula E drivers worked to save energy, conscious of the sensitive energy-restricted nature of the race.
  • The first safety car period occurred on Lap 17 after Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries brought out the first safety car after stopping at Turn 3.
  • Shortly after the safety car period ended on Lap 18, the race was red-flagged on Lap 20 after a multi-car pile-up in the Turn 10 and 11 chicane
  • Upon restarting the race, Mueller took advantage of those who still had Attack Mode remaining and was promoted to fourth place. Meanwhile, Dennis was able to make up six positions at the checkered due to the same circumstances.
  • Mueller’s fourth-place finish marks his best result since the 2024 Misano E-Prix II and his fifth top-five result
  • Though a safety car period and red flag occurred during the 2025 Miami E-Prix, there were no added laps
  • After the team’s home race, Andretti Formula E gained one position in the Team’s Championship standings and now sits seventh with 41 points.

Qualifying

  • For the 25th time in his career, Dennis advanced to the Duels, having finished third in his Qualifying group.
  • The Brit bested Maserati MSG Racing’s Stoffel Vandoorne in the Quarter Final Duel and TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team’s António Félix da Costa in the Semi-Final Duel.
  • Despite losing out on pole by a tenth of a second, Dennis will start the team’s home race on the front row – his 14th Formula E front-row start.

Race

  • In the opening sequence of laps, Dennis dropped back from the front row to save positions, though remaining in the points-scoring positions.
  • At the halfway mark of the E-Prix, the No. 27 struggled with traction, dropping to the back of the field to maximize efficiency and save more energy.
  • As Dennis took his first Attack Mode on Lap 17, Mahindra Racing’s Nyck de Vries brought out the first safety car after coming to a stop at Turn 3.
  • After the red flag period, the British driver lined up 15th and took his final Attack Mode on the opening lap of the restarted E-Prix.
  • Dennis crossed the line in 13th, though due to penalties applied up ahead as a result of cars not using their full Attack Mode, the No. 27 was promoted to ninth.

“Not the result we wanted after qualifying on the front row. We were super unfortunate with the timing of the first safety car, which ultimately ruined our race strategy. We still have some work to do but ran quite well today – likely enough to earn a top-five result. It’s not quite the point haul we were hoping for at the team’s home race, but it was nice to be back on the front row from qualifying, which is super important as we head into the rest of the season.”

Qualifying

  • Mueller was on the fringe of advancing to the Qualifying Duels; however, as the checkered flag fell, the No. 51 was unable to progress and finished ninth in the group.

Race

  • Mueller remained at the back of the field to tactically save energy to use in the closing stages of the E-Prix.
  • On Lap 11, Mueller took his first Attack Mode and was able to use the extra 50kWh of power to progress from 19th to first, leading for the E-Prix for one lap.
  • The 2025 Miami E-Prix marks the fifth different Formula E race that Mueller has led a lap in.
  • Mueller lined up 10th on the restart, crossing the line in the same position. However, due to multiple on-track penalties ahead for cars not using their full Attack Mode, the Swiss driver was promoted to fourth.
  • With the result, Mueller advances from 17th to 15th in the Driver’s World Championship standings.

“Today’s race was the usual chaos that Formula E brings and fortunately, I think we made the right calls and our strategy allowed us to maximize our race. We struggled a bit for pure pace, which I think would have made that extra bit of difference at the end of the E-Prix, but overall I’m happy with a good haul of points. The team certainly deserves those after what was a rough start to our weekend. I’m happy for the team who has put so much effort into this race during the last eight weeks.”

Roger Griffiths

Team Principal

“I’d like to start by saying a big thank you to Homestead-Miami Speedway for providing us with such a great venue. It’s been such a different experience compared to other Championships that have raced here, and hopefully we put on a good show for all of the fans. We certainly saw some exciting racing and a return to the form that we’d always expected, particularly on the one-lap pace with Jake. The engineering team has done a superb job getting to grips with some of the areas where we’ve struggled which led to a very strong qualifying, ultimately just barely missing out on pole position for Jake.

On the other side of the garage, it’s been a little bit of a mixed day for Nico prior to the race with the contact in in Free Practice 2 this morning and struggling in Qualifying. Nonetheless, it was a much better race for him. It was great to see Nico up at the front too and he did a great job to secure a top-four finish. We know that Jake is frustrated with not being able to do better than ninth, but there were a few mitigating circumstances, and bad luck played a big part in his race strategy. All in all, we’re pleased to come away with both cars in the points, and to move up a position in the Team’s Championship standings.”
