ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT TO JOIN iRACING RALLYCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
9.24.20
Five-time U.S. rallycross champions Andretti Autosport will trade the dirt track for the virtual rallycross track as an official team entry in the upcoming iRacing Rallycross World Championship Series, fielding two cars. The team will be one of 13 teams in the virtual racing series and will contend with the VW Beetle.
Led by Michael Andretti, Andretti Autosport holds nearly two decades of accolades across various disciplines of motorsport, including five Indianapolis 500 victories and four INDYCAR SERIES championships. The team has competed in iRacing before, during the INDYCAR iRacing Challenge this past spring for six rounds of competition.
The iRacing Rallycross World Championship Series will unfold over nine rounds of competition, in an all-star invitational racing format. Some of the virtual circuits include Hell Lankebanen, Daytona International Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway and more. The first entry, the No. 27 Gainbridge VW Beetle will be piloted by Beau Albert of Geelong, Australia, the only Australian competing in the series. While the second entry, the No. 28 Oberto Beef Jerky VW Beetle, will be piloted by Vicente Salas, an American, who is the team’s youngest driver across all series at 18-years-old.
The first round of competition of the iRacing Rallycross Series will take place on Saturday at 2 pm/Eastern on the iRacing Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube channels. All other rounds of competition will take place on Saturdays this fall with the finale taking place Dec. 5 at the virtual edition of Sonoma Raceway.
MICHAEL ANDRETTI, CHAIRMAN & CEO, ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT:
“I’m really excited to field Beau and Vicente under the Andretti Autosport banner in the upcoming iRacing Rallycross World Championship. This will be the team’s first outing into eSports as an official championship entry and I’m looking forward to the new opportunities it may bring.”
BEAU ALBERT, NO. 27 GAINBRIDGE DRIVER, ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT:
“To represent Andretti Autosport in the iRX World Championship is a tremendous privilege for me. It was clear to me very quickly that the Andretti team is backing this effort in the Sim racing World very heavily, which is a big confidence booster for myself heading into the new season. I think together there are some fantastic results ahead of us, and I cannot wait for the season to get underway this Saturday.”
VICENTE SALAS, NO. 28 OBERTO BEEF JERKY DRIVER, ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT:
“It is an honor and a privilege to be representing Andretti Autosport in the iRacing Rallycross World Championship Series. I have admired the Andretti family since I was a little boy, and to be able to drive for them is a dream come true.”
