DETROIT – Ryan Hunter-Reay ended a 42-race winless streak when he charged from the 10th starting position to win the second race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear doubleheader on Sunday.
Hunter-Reay, driving the No. 28 DHL Honda for Andretti Autosport, won by 11.3549 seconds over Will Power to earn his first Verizon IndyCar Series victory since the Pocono Raceway event in August 2015. Hunter-Reay led 18 of the 70 laps on the 2.35-mile, 14-turn temporary street course at Belle Isle Park. He inherited the lead seven laps from the finish when teammate Alexander Rossi skidded into a runoff area in Turn 3.
The triumph is the 17th in Indy car racing for Hunter-Reay. It’s his first win on a temporary street circuit since Baltimore in 2012, the year of his only Verizon IndyCar Series championship.
Rossi, who had flat-spotted his tires earlier while braking into a turn, did so again when he went off course on Lap 64, with the left front tire shredding as Hunter-Reay took the lead. Rossi limped around to pit lane for a fresh set of tires and finished 12th.
The Verizon IndyCar Series returns to oval racing with the DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 9. Live coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN and the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network.
