Ryan Hunter-Reay Wins at ABC Supply 500 at Pocono under caution
recap of IndyCar race on Sunday at Pocono Raceway, which ended under caution.
Ryan Hunter-Reay declined to celebrate after winning the ABC Supply 500, which ended with his teammate en route to a hospital by air ambulance.
Hunter-Reay posted his second victory of the season as Juan Pablo Montoya extended his lead in the Verizon IndyCar Series championship by finishing third. Montoya came into the race nine points ahead of Graham Rahal, but Rahal crashed on Lap 93 and finished 20th, dropping 34 points behind Montoya as the series heads to the season finale Aug. 30 at Sonoma Raceway.
Hunter-Reay’s thoughts after the race were with Andretti Autosport teammate Justin Wilson, who sustained an undisclosed head injury after a piece of Sage Karam’s crashing car stuck his helmet during a crash on Lap 179 of the 200-lap race.
“First thoughts with Justin for sure,” Hunter-Reay said. “He’s a friend, a teammate, and it’s a bit hard not knowing anything.
“They gave me a great car today. We came through the field several times, and it was just on rails. … To get a second win with this team after such a tough year is a tremendous, tremendous achievement.”
Josef Newgarden finished second, followed by Montoya, Power and another of Wilson’s teammates, Carlos Munoz.
