Another round, another win for Malaysian racer Tan

Malaysia’s Weiron Tan continues to rev it up in America.

The 20-year-old chalked up his second win of the season in Round 6 of the Pro Mazda Championship at the  Grand Prix of Indianapolis in Indiana on Saturday. 

The 17-lap race was restarted twice, but it did not affect pole-sitter Weiron as he held on to take the chequered flag for Andretti Autosport.

Weiron went on to finish fourth in Round 7, which was won by Frenchman Timothe Buret of defending team champions Juncos Racing.

But Weiron was forced to retire in Round 8 after an accident on the first lap ruined his car’s suspension. The race was won by 18-year-old Santiago Urrutia of Uruguay.

Weiron, competing in his rookie season, was the winner of Round 4 at the Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama last month. It was his second straight podium after finishing second in Round 3 at the Nola Motorsports Park in Louisiana. 

“A big thank you to Andretti Autosport – the team did a great job today. It was one helluva race,” said Kuala Lumpur-born Weiron of his Round 6 victory.

“We needed the points this weekend. We were a bit off the pace, so we did a good job to do whatever we could to stay in front. 

“This is my first time racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and I really like it. It’s unbelievably big. I’ve never seen a race track like this,” added Weiron of the 250,000-capacity Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
