RACE REPORT: 2025 Hankook Berlin E-Prix I

7.12.25

  • The Andretti Formula E team was back in action this weekend for the penultimate doubleheader event of Season 11 at the historic Tempelhof Airport Street Circuit in Berlin, Germany.
  • Following a washed-out Free Practice 2, a delayed Qualifying session resulted in the group stages of the Duels being cancelled. As a result, Nico Mueller finished seventh in his group, placing him 13th on the starting grid. Meanwhile, teammate Jake Dennis finished ninth in the other group, determining his starting position as 16th.
  • In the race, the No. 27 lost power on the start line, which effectively ended Dennis’ day. On the other side of the garage, teammate Mueller was able to capitalize on an early Attack Mode strategy and get himself up into the points-paying positions, taking the checkered in eighth.
  • Race 1 of 2025 Hankook Berlin E-Prix saw two Safety Car periods, resulting in two added laps to the race.
  • Mueller’s eighth-place finish marked the Andretti Formula E team’s 121st top-10 finish in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

Qualifying

  • After sitting near the top of the group during the initial stages of the session, Dennis struggled for grip on his final push laps and dropped to ninth in Group A.

Race

  • Dennis suffered a loss of power at the green and was subsequently forced to retire the car.

“A shorter race than we expected today. We obviously had an issue and we’ve yet to rectify what it was or what caused it. Unfortunately, I didn’t go anywhere when the lights went out, suffering a loss of power so we had to retire the car. A shame of course, but some learnings to be had watching from the sidelines, I guess. A difficult day, but we go again tomorrow.”

Nico Mueller

No. 51 Andretti Porsche 99X Electric

Qualifying

  • Mueller built up to speed in his flying laps of Group A and by the end of the session, the Swiss driver managed to take the checkered flag in seventh.

Race

  • The No. 51 opted for an early Attack Mode strategy, taking his first boost of extra power on Lap 4 and gaining one place before settling into an energy-saving style of driving.
  • Mueller opted for a later PIT BOOST than his rivals, rejoining in 15th but gaining an advantage by delaying his second Attack Mode by nine laps, while others used theirs immediately after their mandatory stop.
  • This strategic timing allowed Mueller to climb to 11th, cross the line in ninth and ultimately be classified eighth after post-race penalties were applied.
  • Mueller’s eighth-place finish marks his 19th Formula E top-10, and brings him within five points of reaching 150 career championship points.

“A tricky day around Berlin in the rain where it seemed we lacked a little bit of pace overall. It seems that we went for a slightly different strategy going into the race as the track dried. We were able to make our way forward a bit towards the end and I think we maximized what we had today. It could have been worse, but also could’ve been better but we’ll take the four points and try to take a step forward for tomorrow’s race.”

Team Principal

“A race of two stories today in Berlin for the Andretti Formula E team. It’s been somewhat of a difficult day all around with the way the weather hampered everybody with the cancellation of Free Practice 2 and the shortened format for qualifying. We didn’t have the best of sessions, starting towards the tail end of the grid, but we still had decent hopes of a good result today.

Unfortunately for Jake, it was not meant to be as a technical issue prevented him from getting away at the start. We’re still investigating what it was and it’s important that we clearly understand what it is as the consequences could mean that we carry a penalty into tomorrow’s race.

On the other side with Nico it was a little bit of a waiting game. We’d anticipated the track drying, perhaps a little more than it did. We were initially struggling for grip, but that was starting to come to us towards the end of the race. We could see that Nico’s pace was picking up and he was able to overtake quite a few cars with a great move at the end to get that final spot. Points are always valuable but unfortunately, with a strong result for the Jaguar team, they move ahead of us in the Team’s Championship standings. We’ve got another opportunity tomorrow and we believe it’s going to be a very different race. The weather looks a little bit better so it’s likely to be much more of an energy style race. We’ll come back tomorrow and fight again.”
